With a considerable chunk of the Vale batting line up including an opening batsman located somewhere across the marsh near Lydd, it was no surprise that Vale were batting first. When they finally arrived and suffered the inevitable verbals for tardiness, it was time to rush the pads on. Hayes - one of the accused was quickly in having only just managed to plaster on his customary factor 1000 sunscreen in time. He and new boy Chris "Steve Harmison" Thomas (21) put on 37 before the latter was bowled by Ham (1-26). Hayes quickly followed having been trapped in front by Matthews (2-27) which left the "Brook" bros to try and stem the flow of wickets. Steve Brook succumbed to Lindsay (2-16) a short time later after playing a shot which raised an eyebrow with his batting coach. Chris Brook, suffering from a self inflicted illness and having been replaced by Adam Wickens (12) in the batting order for reasons which we cannot print here, then received a decent inswinger which crashed into his middle stump. Luckily Carl "Silver Fox" Brook was able to continue his good form with the bat to make a fine 72 with Chris Kirkham (10) chipping in with some useful lower order runs. The rest of the Vale wickets were taken by Fletcher (3-28) and Smith (1-36).
In reply Lydd got off to a bad start with Matt Bowles (1-18) removing Everitt before he could open his account. A decent partnership between Fletcher (25) and Smith (38) then began to shape before debutant number two Jamie Wicks (1-25) removed the former with another stumping coming from wicket keeper Steve Brook. Lusty blows from C.Matthews and A.Lindsey (40 not out) kept Lydd in the game but Adam Wickens (2-30), Carl Brook (2-36), Guy Wenham (2-8) and chairman Ivan Buss (1-27) all chipped in to restrict the hosts to leave them 16 off the last over, a target which was to prove too great as the last wicket fell to a run out.
Clive Vale won by 12 runs.
