For what was to be the penultimate fixture of the season for both teams and having lost the toss, Vale who were kitted out in new club shirts, found themselves in familiar territory bowling first in a 35 over a side match.
Opening bowlers Steve Brook and Chris Kirkham (1-36) extracted sharp bounce from the wet wicket. Opening batsman Southworth batted very well and was served by a wide array of shots including the reverse sweep and was unlucky not to get his century as he was bowled by Carl Brook (2-34) for 99. Only Tidmarsh (18 not out) and Watson (13) managed to reach double figures as the home team reached 159 from their 35 overs. The other Vale wicket takers were Matt Bowles (2-23) and Ivan Buss (2-17).
In reply all of the Vale batsman made starts but none of them went on to make a big score as the Mountfield attack took wickets at regular intervals. Andy Hayes (25), Adam Wickens (18), James Pillbeam (16), Carl Brook (15), Steve Brook (20) and Chris Brook (23) were the main run scorers with wickets coming from Howell (1-30). Tidmarsh (1-24), Tapsfield (3-27), Weekes (2-36), Watson (1-24) and Mallum (1-16). It was left to Matt Bowles (9 not out) and Ivan Buss (1 not out) to take Vale through to victory in the 35th over.
