Put into bat on a wicket favouring the bowlers, a number of the Vale batsman got off to good starts, G.Wenham (13), A.Hayes (23), R.Patel (22), C.Brook (30), A.Wickens (45 not out) however some good disciplined bowling from Athletic, F.Bahati (2-21), Stewart (2-46), Sheppard (2-18), McFarlan (1-37), Priddy (1-4) and some bad shots from a few of the Vale batsman meant that Vale were prevented from going on to make a larger total.

In reply Athletic lost a wicket in the first over which bought Priddy (63) to the wicket who proceeded to despatch the bowling to all areas, supported by Bahati (25), Eason (25 not out) and Sheppard (17 not out) with wickets from Vale bowlers A.Wickens (3-35) and A.Hayes (2-33).
