Due to the cancellation of the Gills Green fixture, Vale arranged an away trip to Brighton on the Friday evening. The team changed many times and ended with Vale travelling with 10 blokes keen for a Sunday afternoon laugh.
This game saw the bowlers win with 18wkts taken and only 211 runs scored. After winning the toss Vale chose to bat bearing in mind 2 players were not arriving till 3pm. It did not take long for the phone call to Rama patel to put his foot down to get here quicker as Vale lost 2 wickets in the first 2 overs. A steady partnership between Steve brook (18) and Carl Brook (34) meant that not all the Vale team were padded up. The introduction of Brighton Crescents 2 spinners saw wickets fall at regular intervals with contributions from Darren Stamp (11) and Matt Bowles (16), however Fines 4-23 and Wood 3-10 meant an early to the innings in 27 overs.
With the innings finished early and the kettle not even plugged in yet it was decided that Crescent should have a little bat before tea which gave Vale the opportunity to take early wickets. This was acheived with some good early bowling from Steve Brook with 2 wickets and Martin Deaves 1-15 which put the nerves into the Crescent batsmen when they returned for tea.
After tea the pressure was kept up with Guy Wenham 2-18 and new boy TJ 1-11 with only Gatford 12 reaching double figures. An excellent knock from Crescent captain Morris (20) saw the total needed decrease but the return of Steve brook finishing with 4-22, saw momentum swing back Vale's way. A tense finish was had but 14 year old Wood having taken wickets earlier returned to swing his bat and score the vital runs with an important 15 not out which gave Crescent an exciting 2 wicket victory.
An excellent afternoon was had by everyone and a future fixture next year could be arranged.
